Open a project created in an earlier version

 

You can open a project created in an earlier version of NVivo—the project is converted into the current NVivo 11 project format and saved with a new name (so your original project file is not changed).

What do you want to do?

 

Open a project created in NVivo 10, NVivo 9, NVivo 8 or NVivo 7

If you open a project created in a previous version of NVivo, a converted NVivo 11 version of the project is created—your original project is not changed.

  1. Click the File tab, and then click Open.

Keyboard shortcut To display the Open Project dialog box, press CTRL+O.

  1. Select NVivo Projects from the list.

  1. Locate and select the project you want to open.

  2. Click Open. The Convert Project dialog box opens.

  1. Click the Browse button, and then choose where you want to save the converted project.

  1. Do one of the following:

  • To save as a standalone project, select NVivo Projects (*.nvp ) from the Save as type list, and then enter a name for the converted project in the File name box.

  • To save as a server project, select NVivo Server Projects from the Save as type list, then select the server from the Connection name box, and then enter a name for the converted project in the Project name box.

  1. Click Save.

  1. Click Convert.

NOTE  

  • The Connection name box is empty if you have not set up any server connections—click the Add button to create a new server connection using the Connection Properties dialog box.

  • If you receive a message indicating that you do not have permission to create a project on the server, verify with your server administrator that you are in a server user group that has permission to create new projects.

  • If the project is password protected, you will be prompted to enter password.

  • Any document sources that were created by importing PDF files (in NVivo version 9.1 or earlier) are retained as document sources—if you want to work with this source content in the PDF source type, you must re-import the PDF files into your project.

  • Project models have been replaced by maps in NVivo 11. Models created in NVivo 10 or earlier are not supported in NVivo 11 and will not be included in the converted project. We recommend you export your models as images and then import them into your NVivo 11 project.  

  • When you convert an NVivo 10 or NVivo 9 project:

  • Classified nodes are converted to case nodes, and stored in the Cases folder.

  • PDFs may have more coding references, annotations, or See Also links depending on how you selected the content initially. The same content may be divided or combined into references differently.

  • When you convert an NVivo 8 or 7 project:

  • NVivo 7 teams (and team member information) are not converted.

  • Free nodes are converted to nodes, and placed in a user-defined folder named 'Free Nodes'.

  • Tree nodes are converted to nodes, and placed in a user-defined folder named 'Tree Nodes'.

  • Cases are placed in a user-defined folder named 'Cases' within the Cases folder.

  • A case classification named 'Case' is created and existing case attributes are converted to attributes in this classification.

  • If the project text content language is 'Dutch', the text content language is set to 'Other', and the Dutch stop words are recorded in the stop word list for the text content language 'Other'.

Open a project created in NVivo 1 or NVivo 2

  1. Click the File tab, and then click Open.

Keyboard shortcut  To display the Open Project dialog box, press CTRL+O

  1. Select NVivo Projects from the list.

  1. Locate and select the project you want to open.

  2. Click Open. The Convert Project dialog box opens.

  1. Click the Browse button, and then choose where you want to save the converted project.

  1. Do one of the following:

  • To save as a standalone project, select NVivo Projects (*.nvp ) from the Save as type list, and then enter a name for the converted project in the File name box.

  • To save as a server project, select NVivo Server Projects from the Save as type list, then select the server from the Connection name box, and then enter a name for the converted project in the Project name box.

  1. Click Save.

  1. (Optional) Select the Code sources at nodes check box, if you want to create a node for each document in the project. The node name is based on the document name, and the node classification is set to 'Converted Document'. Each document is coded at the node created for it, and any document attributes are converted to attribute values on the node. If the documents in your project are already coded at cases, do not select this option.

  2. (Optional) Select the Import paragraph styles check box, if you want to import the paragraph or text styles used in the existing project. If you do not select this option, the default paragraph styles for new projects (specified in your application options) will be applied.

  3. (Optional) If the project is password protected, select the Project requires a username, or username and password check box and enter your user name and password (if required).

  4. Click Convert.

NOTE

  • The Connection name box is empty if you have not set up any server connections—click the Add button to create a new server connection using the Connection Properties dialog box.

  • If you receive a message indicating that you do not have permission to create a project on the server, verify with your server administrator that you are in a server user group that has permission to create new projects.

  • If you do not select Code sources at nodes, then if documents in your project have attributes, a source classification named 'Converted Document'  is created. Documents with attributes are assigned to this classification and document attributes are converted to attribute values on the document source.

  • When you convert projects created in NVivo 1 or NVivo 2, the following items are not converted:

  • Models

  • Team member information including user names and passwords

  • Node-to-node links

  • Extract nodes

  • Any background colors or text highlighting

  • Any files in the NVivo 2 'External DataBites' folder will be imported into your NVivo 11 project as 'externals'. However, paths to the files will still refer to their original location i.e.: \\All Users\\External DataBites\\'  or elsewhere in your NVivo 2 project folder structure. Before you delete the NVivo 2 project, you should copy these files to a different folder and update the file path or location within the NVivo 11 externals. Open a project created in N4, N5 or N6 (including N6 Student)

  1. Click the File tab, and then click Open.

Keyboard shortcut To display the Open Project dialog box, press CTRL+O

  1. Select N4, N5 & N6 Projects (.stp) from the Files of type list.

  1. Locate and select the project you want to open.

  2. Click Open. The Convert Project dialog box opens.

  1. Click the Browse button, and then choose where you want to save the converted project.

  1. Do one of the following:

  • To save as a standalone project, select NVivo Projects (*.nvp ) from the Save as type list, and then enter a name for the converted project in the File name box.

  • To save as a server project, select NVivo Server Projects from the Save as type list, then select the server from the Connection name box, and then enter a name for the converted project in the Project name box.

  1. Click Save.

  1. (Optional) Select the Code sources at nodes check box, to create a node for each document in the project. The node name is based on the document name. Each document is coded at the node created for it. If the documents in your existing project are already coded at nodes that represent cases, do not select this option.

  2. Click Convert.

  • Clipboard node

  • Reports folder

  • Commands folder

  • Rawfiles folder
