Open (convert) a FrameWork project

This feature is available in NVivo Pro and Plus editions. Learn more

 

FrameWork projects can be exported to a .fez file and then opened (and converted) in NVivo.

What do you want to do?

 

Open (and convert) a FrameWork project in NVivo

  1. Click the File tab, and then click Open.

Keyboard shortcut To display the Open Project dialog box, press CTRL+O

The Open Project dialog box opens.

  1. Select FrameWork Export (*.fez) from the File or Project type list.

  2. Locate and select the project you want to open.

  3. Click Open. The Convert Project dialog box opens.

  1. Click the Browse button, and then choose where you want to save the converted project.

  1. Do one of the following:

  • To save as a standalone project, select NVivo Projects (*.nvp ) from the Save as type list, and then enter a name for the converted project in the File name box.

  • To save as a server project, select NVivo Server Projects from the Save as type list, then select the server from the Connection name box, and then enter a name for the converted project in the Project name box.

  1. Click Save.

  1. Click the Convert button.

A new NVivo project is created—refer to Understand how FrameWork project elements are converted to NVivo elements for more information.

NOTE

  • The Connection name box is empty if you have not set up any server connections—click the Add button to create a new server connection using the Connection Properties dialog box.

  • If you cannot select NVivo Projects (*.nvp), check your connections. You need a standalone connection to create a standalone project saved to your computer or a network drive.

  • If you receive a message indicating that you do not have permission to create a project on the server, verify with your server administrator that you are in a server user group that has permission to create new projects.

The documents are stored in the Internals folder in the NVivo project.

Case/Data unit

Case node*

 

* Only created when a data unit is assigned to the case in the FrameWork project

A case node is created in the NVivo project for each data unit that is assigned to a case in the FrameWork project. The content of the data unit is coded to the case node.

The case nodes are:

  • Stored in the user folder 'Cases' that is created in the NVivo project
  • Assigned to the node classification 'Case' that is created in the NVivo project

The attributes are added to the node classification 'Case' which is created in the NVivo project.

The attribute values are set on the case nodes.

Source name

Case node

Source names in the FrameWork project are converted to case nodes which are assigned to the classification 'Case' (which is created in your project).

Any content in the data unit (associated with the source name) that is referenced in a summary is coded to the case node.

Theme

 Theme node

The thematic framework from your FrameWork project is converted to a node hierarchy in NVivo, stored in a user folder called 'Themes' that is created in the NVivo project.

Index

Node reference

Indexing is converted to coding at the theme nodes created in the NVivo project. If you open a node you will see all the references.

Summary

Summary

Summaries are viewed within framework matrices in NVivo. If you want to see the summaries, you must create framework matrices which include the case and  theme nodes that are the rows and columns of your FrameWork chart.

NOTE  In NVivo, you can use the Advanced Find feature to find nodes that are row or column nodes for summaries, and then include these nodes as the rows and columns in your framework matrices.

The summary link connects source content that is coded to the case with text in the summary.
Central chart Classification sheet for the 'Case' node classification When you open the classification sheet for the node classification 'Case', you will see all the cases in your project and their attribute values.

Items Not Converted

The following FrameWork project elements are not converted:

  • Notes associated with data units, summaries and other FrameWork project elements are not converted

  • Cases without summaries

  • Text types

  • Glossary

  • Categories

  • Project user profiles

  • Audit trail

  • Analytical queries—in NVivo, you can view and create summaries using framework matrices.
