Query options

 


When a query generates results that can be saved into your project, you can set your preferences on the Query Options tab or in the Store Query Results dialog (depending on the type of query).  

These options are only available for Text Search, Coding, Compound, and Matrix Coding queries.

For Text Search, Coding and Compound queries, you can choose:

  • Preview Only The results are displayed in Detail View. You can explore them and decide whether you want to save them into your project.

  • Create Results as New Node Creates a new node, codes all matching contents at the node, and saves it in the selected node folder.

  • Merge Results into Existing Node Codes all matching content at an existing node. Click Select (beside the Name box) and choose the required node.

For Matrix Coding queries, you can choose:

  • Preview Only The results are displayed in Detail View. You can explore them and decide whether you want to save them into your project.
  • Create Results as New Node Matrix  Save the results to a new node matrix.
Location If you are saving the results as a node, node hierarchy or node matrix, by default the results are saved into the Results folder under the Queries folder. You can choose to save them into a location within your Nodes folder.
Name You must enter a name when you are saving the results as a new project item.
If you are merging the results into an existing node or set, click Select and choose the existing node or set that you want to merge into.
Description If you are saving the results as a new project item, you can optionally enter a description.
Open results Open the results in Detail View after the query has run.
By default, results are opened in Detail View, but you can choose not to open them if you have chosen to save the results to a node, node matrix or node hierarchy.
Create if empty Create a new project item (for example, node) even when no results are returned by the query.
Aggregate coding from child nodes
(NVivo Pro and Plus only)
See all the coding at the individual child nodes when you open the parent node.
This option is only available when you choose to create the results as a node hierarchy.
Spread coding This option allows you to spread the coding to the surrounding content. It is only available for Text Search, Coding and Compound queries.
